Impartial Review: BooTea Detox

As busy as life in the city can get, there’s always time for a new health fad.

Virtually everyone I meet is on some kind of detox or diet, each with varying levels of insanity. When I heard about the BooTea teatox I have to admit I was a little skeptical, but when I got the chance to try it and read more about it, I thought it could only do me good… (I also took part in Go Sober for October this month which is great for detoxifying.)

As with all the impartial reviews on this site, I use five categories to assess the product; Smell, Effectiveness, Convenience, Ingredients and that secret ‘R Factor’.

The BooTea detox is a 14 or 28 day plan in which you drink a daytime tea in the morning and a bedtime cleanse at night, to remove toxins from your body. I’ll let them explain further themselves;

“Our daytime tea works to increase your metabolism, by doing so this helps your body convert food into energy to burn fat and calories whilst also suppressing your appetite. As a result you should begin to notice that you have more energy and more motivation to exercise.

“The appetite suppressing ingredients will mean you find yourself feeling less hungry and make you less prone to snacking. Our Bedtime Cleanse tea bag (to be taken at night time) works on cleaning out your digestive system, helping to prevent excess calories from being absorbed and stored as fat.”

P.S. You can eat and drink as normal, but this works best alongside a calorie controlled diet and without alcohol, BooTea also have their own eating plan.

Smell

This might be a good time to mention that I loathe tea. Be it green, brown or matcha, I don’t like it. However, these teas really smelled like they were about to do me some good (and a bit like vegetable soup).

They also tasted great, there was no overpowering ‘tea’ taste, and I added a spoonful of honey for the first day as I got used to the flavour (the bedtime cleanse reminded me of the taste of Jamaican cerasee tea which is probably the worst taste on earth…) but after I got over that, they tasted as nice as tea can reasonably be expected to taste.

Effectiveness

Secondly, and most importantly for this product, is effectiveness. I was more motivated to exercise and generally had more energy, felt less hungry and loved the tradition of drinking tea before bed.

By the way, *please* understand that they aren’t joking when they say the bedtime cleanse has a laxative effect. Enough said.

The internet is littered with before and after pictures from the BooTea detox, there is no way I’m exposing my flesh for this blog but I can reveal that I did lose weight during the 14 day detox.

Convenience

Full disclosure time! The reason I tried this teatox was because I was given a free 14 day detox when I attended a Holland and Barratt press day in October, it came in a bag with loads of other health goodies and I was under no pressure to review this detox or any other product.

But if you do want to try it, it is available from Holland and Barratt for £19.99 and you can also order online from BooTea themselves who are UK based and ship worldwide.

The teabags come in resealable bags (pictured above) in a box with clear instructions which is really helpful, one of my teabags did break on the way to work but that was under the pressure of a bag of trainers for Zumba, a packed lunch and the Northern Line rush hour squeeze.

Ingredients

This product gets full marks for its ingredients, as they are all natural and listed in full on the box. The Daytime Detox is made of; Chinese Oolong tea, Maté leaves, Ginger root, Fennel seeds, Lemongrass, Dandelion leaf, Ginseng root, Gotu Kola leaves and Nettle leaves.

And the bedtime cleanse has; Senna leaves, Peppermint leaves, Fenugreek seeds, Liquorice root, Burdock root, Hawthorn leaves, Valerian root and Psyllium seeds.

The ‘R Factor’

And last but not least, the R Factor. We all try lots of new products a year and have a great experience with them, but those products that we really truly love, we tell others about. That’s why ‘R’ stands for recommend.

There is a whole BooTea community out there spreading the word about the detox on twitter and instagram which really makes you feel part of a movement.

BooTea Tweet 2

I recommended this product to several people with the caviat that it won’t magically make you thin if you don’t work out or eat healthily, but it will help you cleanse your body of toxins. All in all, after 14 days of teatoxing I do feel lighter, my skin is brighter and I would definitely do it again.

The only potential downside to this product is the price, and I think with a little care, attention and sourcing skills you could probably make your own if you wanted to.
